Stone town of Zanzibar is also known as mji mkongwe (Swahili for Old town),is the oldest part of Zanzibar island,the central city of Zanzibar in Tanzania
Stone town located in the western coast of Unguja, the main island of the Zanzibar Archipelago. The former capital of Zanzibar sultanate and the flourishing center of spices trade and the slave trade in the 19th century retained it's importance as the central city of Zanzibar during the period of British protectorate when Tanganyika and Zanzibar unite to form the United Republic of Tanzania, Zanzibar kept a semi-antonomous status with stone town as it's local government seat.
