Overview

The Rongai route is the only route that approaches Kilimanjaro from the north, close to the Kenyan border. Though gaining popularity amongst climbers, Rongai has low traffic. It is the preferred route for those looking for an alternative to the crowded Marangu route, for those who would like a more remote hike, and for those who are climbing during the rainy season (the north side receives less precipitation).

Tour Itinerary

Day 1 Arrive in Tanzania

Direct arrival at a lodge in Moshi at the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro. This evening you will have a pre-climb briefing with your guide and a consultant.

Day 2 Moshi based lodge to Rongai gate to Simba Camp

  • Hiking time: 3 -4 hours
  • Distance: Approximately 8 kilometers
  • Habitat: Montane forest
Depart from Moshi to Rongai gate, complete your registration. Start your trek through the forest zone that shelters variety of wildlife. Forest begins to thin out and Simba camp is at the edge of the moorland zone with extensive views.

Day 3 Simba Camp to Second Cave Camp

  • Hiking time: 3 to 4 hours
  • Distance: Approximately 6 kilometers
  • Habitat: Moorland
Steady trek into the heather and moorland.

Day 4 Second Cave Camp to Kikelewa Cave Camp

  • Hiking time: 3-4 hours
  • Distance: Approximately 6 kilometers
  • Habitat: Moorland
Continue your way through the heather and moorland, a steeper, rockier and slightly more physically demanding journey today compared to the previous day.

Day 5 Kikelewa Cave Camp to Mawenzi Tarn Camp

  • Hiking time: 4 hours
  • Distance: Approximately 5 kilometers
  • Habitat:Moorland
Continue from the heather and moorland into the alpine desert zone towards the jagged Mawenzi cone

Day 6 Mawenzi Tarn Camp to Kibo Camp

  • Hiking time: 5-6 hours
  • Distance: Approximately 8 kilometers
  • Habitat: Alpine desert
Today you cross the alpine zone and journey across 'the saddle' between Mawenzi and Kibo to your final camp before the summit attempt.

Day 7 Kibo Camp to Uhuru Peak to Horombo Camp

  • Hiking time: 6-8 hours to reach Uhuru Peak, 4-5 hours to descend to Horombo Hut
  • Distance: Approximately 6 kilometer ascent and 16 kilometer descent
  • Habitat: Stone scree and ice-capped summit
Around mid-night start for the summit to Gilman’s Point (5681m) and then proceed to Stella point, take a short rest and continue to Uhuru Peak (5895m). Spend few minutes at the peak and later descend to Kibo camp for a short rest and later descend to Horombo Camp to wind up your day.

Day 8 Horombo Camp to Marangu Gate to Moshi

  • Hiking time: 5-7 hours
  • Distance: Approximately 20 kilometers
  • Habitat: Montane forest
Your final descent on Kilimanjaro through the heather and moorland, and then to rain forest zone to Marangu Gate (1860m). Upon arrival at the gate complete park formalities, and tipping ceremony with your support team. Our driver will then transfer you to Moshi.
